Train stations are transit hubs with diverse user needs. NS wanted to move beyond purely functional seating and create spaces that feel welcoming, comfortable and linked to local identity, while also serving practical requirements such as seating and device charging. The design needed to work within expansive halls and complement the architecture of major stations like The Hague Central Station.

We developed bespoke furniture elements that function as both comfortable seating and expressive spatial features. Drawing inspiration from the city’s character, the designs act as connecting elements within the station environment. The approach focused on creating a relaxed atmosphere without compromising on durability and usability for daily commuters and visitors.

For the spacious waiting hall at The Hague, modern, abstract beach house-inspired installations referencing the nearby Scheveningen coast were created. These design elements serve as both meeting points and functional seating, with integrated spaces for device recharging. The open construction encourages a “huddle” atmosphere, offering comfort while visually tying the station space back to its regional context.

The Waiting Spots have elevated the waiting experience by introducing comfortable, well-crafted seating that resonates with local identity. The concept has since been extended into additional areas such as the station food court, strengthening the sense of place throughout the transport environment.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can go beyond utility to shape more human-centred public environments. By integrating form, function and local narrative, Tchai helped NS create waiting areas that are welcoming, memorable and aligned with the identity of the cities they serve; enhancing both everyday passenger comfort and the overall station experience.
